Artists working in the visual arts are invited to apply for this Residency, which provides the opportunity for an artist to assess their development and practice, during their time in Durham.
A typical applicant will be above the age of 25, be in possession of a good first degree - BA (Hons) in an Art and Design discipline (1 or 2i) - and is likely to have completed an MA course. The applicant will have participated in solo exhibitions outside of those associated with art education. This residency is not suitable for artists who have graduated from a BA course in the last three years.
Benefits include:
* a fee of £17,000
* a studio within the Cathedral precincts
* subsidised living accommodation at St Chad’s College, Durham. This includes full board during term time. A kitchen is available for the artist’s use. The artist contributes one-third of the total cost. During the current year (2007-8) the artist’s contribution is £1363.
* the opportunity to teach in the School of Arts, Design, Media and Culture at the University of Sunderland. 30 days paid at VL rate. Teaching (or agreed collaboration) is arranged with Professor Eric Bainbridge, to reflect the particular strengths and interests of the artist appointed. The School is very well equipped and offers a wide range of programmes in art and design including fine art photography, glass and ceramics, design, performing arts and media studies at BA and MA levels
* an appropriate form of introduction of the artist and her/his work to the staff and students at the University of Sunderland
* an exhibition at the Reg Vardy Gallery and Durham Art Gallery at the end of the residency
